A fatal shooting occurred at Lawrence City Hall this afternoon, city officials confirmed. City Manager Craig Owens and Police Chief Rich Lockhart briefed the media, providing preliminary details about the incident.

According to the Lawrence Kansas Police Department, a man forced his way into the building and broke through a secured door on the fourth floor, an area not open to the public. City employees attempted to remove the man, leading to a struggle. During the altercation, the man was fatally shot by an employee who was trained and authorized to carry a firearm.

No city employees were seriously injured. Investigators say the deceased suspect is likely not from the Lawrence area, and efforts are underway to notify next of kin.

The Lawrence Police Department is leading the investigation in cooperation with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

City Hall will remain closed today, January 5, and Municipal Court offices will stay closed until Thursday, January 8. Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
