Kansas education officials were informed this week that federal funding for several key programs has been delayed indefinitely by the U.S. Department of Education. These programs, already approved by Congress, support student learning, teacher development, and other school-based services.

Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson said the state typically receives notice by July 1 regarding the release of Title funds, but this year, the notification was replaced by a message stating the department is reviewing several programs.

The delay affects nearly $50 million in Kansas school funding, including:

  • $6.2 million for migrant education (Title I-C)
  • $15.8 million for teacher development (Title II-A)
  • $4.8 million for services for English learners (Title III-A)
  • $8.3 million for student support and enrichment (Title IV-A)
  • $7.8 million for after-school programs (Title IV-B)

Watson noted that rural districts relying on REAP flexibility could be especially impacted. The federal department also notified Kansas that funding for adult education and GED programs will not move forward at this time. There is no set timeline for when, or if, the funds will be released. Districts have been urged to plan accordingly.
