A measles case has been confirmed in Sedgwick County involving an unvaccinated child between the ages of 5 and 10, according to the county health department. Officials are working to trace the source of exposure and notify anyone who may have been in contact with the infected individual. The health department is urging residents to check their vaccination status and consult their healthcare providers if symptoms appear.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) also reported three additional measles cases statewide over the past week, bringing the total to 49 cases across eight counties in southwest Kansas. These include Morton, Stevens, Haskell, Kiowa, Grant, Finney, Ford, and Gray counties. The newly reported Sedgwick County case was not included in the state’s most recent update.
One person remains hospitalized due to the outbreak. Health officials warn that the virus could continue to spread, particularly in areas with low vaccination rates, potentially extending the outbreak for many months.
