Governor Laura Kelly issued a state of disaster emergency proclamation at 7:30 a.m. today in response to winter weather expected to affect Kansas this weekend. The declaration allows the state to use additional resources and includes waivers on hours of service for transportation, fuel, and propane providers to help maintain essential services.

A major winter storm is expected to impact much of the country, with an arctic front bringing very cold temperatures, strong winds, and dangerous wind chills. Snowfall across Kansas is expected to vary, ranging from light amounts to several inches in some areas.

Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency kits for their homes and vehicles. Home kits should include items such as a battery-powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, warm clothing and blankets, nonperishable food, high-energy snacks, and enough drinking water for at least seven days. Vehicle emergency kits should include jumper cables, flares or reflective markers, an ice scraper, a phone charger, blankets, and materials to improve tire traction.

“The current forecast for much of the state calls for frigid temperatures accompanied by snow and wind gusts,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “I urge everyone to be prepared. Stay inside as much as possible and avoid travel if you can. Make sure your home emergency kit is stocked and if you must travel, be sure your car emergency kit is ready.”

Officials urge people to avoid travel if possible and to stay informed through local media. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management will continue monitoring conditions and assist local agencies as needed.
