Governor Laura Kelly announced Friday that four Kansas communities have secured over $1.9 million in infrastructure funding to enhance local airports. This includes more than $1.7 million from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), along with nearly $200,000 in matching funds from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub and Build Kansas Fund.
Beyond these four awards, the Build Kansas Fund has supplied matching funds for 23 additional federal grant projects across Kansas, investing over $28.5 million and securing more than $44.8 million in federal grants. The Kansas Infrastructure Hub supports local communities by connecting state agencies and offering resources to help maximize Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding opportunities. The Build Kansas Fund provides state matching dollars for federal grant projects across Kansas, with $200 million approved by the Kansas Legislature and Governor Kelly in 2023 to support state-local match requirements for BIL projects.
The four Kansas airport projects receiving funding are:
- Independence Municipal Airport – Taxiway Rehabilitation

The combined total investment by the Build Kansas Fund in all projects is over $28.5 million, which has resulted in federal grant awards of more than $44.8 million.
The Kansas Infrastructure Hub connects multiple state agencies and serves as a resource center for Kansas communities to identify best practices for maximizing BIL funding opportunities. The Build Kansas Fund provides state matching dollars for projects throughout Kansas that successfully apply for federal grants under BIL. In 2023, the Kansas Legislature and Governor Kelly approved $200 million for the Build Kansas Fund to provide state-matching dollars to Kansas entities and projects to meet federal-local match requirements.
