Governor Laura Kelly announced nearly $31.5 million in funding for 31 projects across Kansas to improve walkable, bike-friendly routes through the Transportation Alternatives (TA) Program. Administered by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and funded by the Federal Highway Administration, this grant program supports bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, Safe Routes to School, historic transportation projects, and environmental and beautification initiatives like Main Street enhancements.
Since 2019, under the bipartisan Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE), KDOT has allocated over $95 million for 122 TA projects across urban and rural areas. This year’s grant represents the largest funding since the federal program’s inception, according to Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed.
The program requires a 20% local match, amounting to $2.79 million from local sources and $5.15 million from KDOT state funds.
