Governor Laura Kelly verbally declared a state of disaster emergency at 2:08 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, in response to heavy rainfall causing flooding and flash flood risks across parts of Kansas. The declaration enables state resources to be deployed for emergency support.

“Flood waters can be deceptive; and it only takes 18 inches of water to float a car,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “If you are traveling in areas with heavy rainfall, I encourage you to remember one simple phrase if there is water on the roadway: ‘Turn around, don’t drown.”

In response, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) has partially activated the State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka. The center is monitoring conditions, coordinating with local officials, and preparing to provide assistance as needed.
