Governor Laura Kelly has requested an extension from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to submit a major presidential disaster declaration. The extension, sought until March 6, 2025, is for a severe winter storm that occurred January 4-5, 2025, bringing heavy snowfall, high winds, and extreme cold. The request also includes snow assistance for counties that experienced record or near-record snowfall.
“This extension is required due to challenges in gathering data on sustained damages that will strain local budgets to repair,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “I am seeking time to collect data and validate all legitimate expenses to aid local governments in restoring the infrastructure so vital to the safety and wellbeing of Kansans.”
Governor Kelly emphasized the need for additional time to complete preliminary damage assessments to qualify for federal aid through FEMA’s Public Assistance Program. This program offers cost-shared funding to repair public infrastructure, including roads and bridges.
