The flower beds and neatly maintained walkways at Fort Hays State University reflect the year-round dedication of the university’s Grounds Department. From planting geraniums and lantanas to clearing storm debris, the team works tirelessly to keep the campus looking its best for students, staff, and thousands of annual visitors.
The department is led by Brenden Ibarra, who began his career with the team as a student employee. After earning an agronomy degree from FHSU in 2019, he advanced through the ranks and became Grounds Manager in 2023. Under his leadership, the department adopted a cross-training model to foster teamwork and shared responsibility.
Supporting Brenden are Cody Norton, who manages the greenhouse and landscape efforts, and Trevor Deets, who oversees general grounds maintenance. Together with their crews—including student workers and full-time staff—they handle everything from planting and irrigation to equipment repair and emergency response.
Their behind-the-scenes efforts play a vital role in creating the welcoming, well-kept environment that defines the FHSU campus.
