The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory after harmful blue-green algae mats (HAMs) were confirmed at Marion County Lake.
Unlike typical harmful algal blooms (HABs), which are microscopic and often create surface scum or discoloration in the water, HAMs grow on the bottom of lakes, rivers, or other surfaces. These mats can break loose, float to the surface, and wash up along shorelines. They may appear dark green, blue-green, brown, or black and can be mixed with harmless algae or vegetation.
Both HABs and HAMs are capable of producing toxins, but HAMs can persist year-round, even in water that looks clear. Health risks are greatest when mats are ingested or disturbed, particularly for children and pets.
KDHE advises people at HAM-affected waters to avoid touching or eating algal mats, prevent pets from drinking the water, and wash thoroughly after contact. Boaters and anglers are urged to clean equipment to prevent spreading algae to other waterbodies.
