The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in two game bird operations in Doniphan and Rooks counties, marking the first cases in Kansas commercial operations since spring 2024. HPAI has also been detected in wild birds and backyard flocks this fall. The affected sites are quarantined, and the birds will be humanely depopulated to prevent further spread. KDA is establishing surveillance zones around the infected areas, restricting bird and poultry product movement without permission. Poultry owners in these counties are urged to contact KDA and self-report their flocks.
HPAI, primarily spread by migratory wild birds, poses a significant risk during the fall migration. Poultry producers are advised to enhance biosecurity by separating domestic and wild birds. Symptoms of HPAI include respiratory distress, reduced appetite, decreased egg production, and sudden death. Immediate veterinary contact is recommended if symptoms arise.
