In order to prevent demolition on the former Kansas State Penitentiary, a project proposed by Kansas Senator Jeff Pittman and Leavenworth Mayor Pro Tem Holly Pittman, has the potential to prevent demolition, alleviate taxpayer costs, and repurpose the site into a major tourism attraction.
The Lansing Historical Society fully endorsed the project after a detailed prison tour and recognizing its potential. Recently, the Kansas Department of Corrections and the Society signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance the Historic Kansas State Penitentiary Site. Senator Pittman has also secured state funds for roof and wall stabilization while a comprehensive development plan is created.
On Friday, September 13th, the doors of the penitentiary opened for tours. Tours will be running throughout September, with the last one of the season on October 26th. They will also have their first annual car show on Saturday, September 28, as a fundraiser for the Lansing Historical Society and Museum.
You can find more information, and book a tour at the Lansing Historical Society and Museum’s website.
