As students across Kansas gear up for the new school year, Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt urges students and parents to include insurance on their back-to-school checklist.
Schmidt said that many insurance companies offer products and discounts geared toward students. This includes:
- Good Student Discount: Good grades can save you money. Be sure to notify your auto insurance agent each semester when you achieve good grades. You may qualify for a discount, leading to potential savings on your premiums.
- Health Insurance: While many students are covered under their parents’ health insurance plan, it’s crucial to confirm the details and understand any limitations or exclusions. Students who are no longer eligible for coverage through their parents should look into student health insurance options or consider purchasing an individual plan.
- Renters Insurance: Renters insurance protects your personal property from theft, fire, or water damage, even if you’re living in a dorm. It’s generally affordable and offers valuable coverage. Additionally, some homeowners’ policies may extend this protection.
- Identity Theft Coverage: Review your homeowners’ insurance policy to see if it includes identity theft coverage while students are away. If you have renters’ insurance, check whether it covers identity theft or if you can add this protection.
