Authorities are investigating the shooting deaths of two horses used in therapy programs for veterans and first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
According to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, the horses were shot and killed from the roadway near the area of Bradford and Mission Valley roads, northeast of Eskridge, during the overnight hours of January 30–31. The suspect or suspects remain unknown.
Sheriff Eric Kirsch said on Facebook that the horses were an important part of therapeutic services for first responders and military veterans and described the incident as a serious criminal act. The animals were transported to Kansas State University for forensic examination, and investigators are treating the case with the same level of priority as a homicide investigation.
The sheriff’s office is dedicating all available investigative resources to identifying and arresting those responsible. A reward of $500 is being offered for information leading to a lawful arrest and conviction.
Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office.
