This July marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which became law in 1990. The ADA is a landmark civil rights law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in key areas such as employment, education, transportation, and access to public and private spaces open to the general public. Its purpose is to ensure that people with disabilities have equal rights and opportunities.
To celebrate this milestone, individuals are encouraged to share how the ADA has made a difference in their lives using the hashtag #ThanksToTheADA. When posting on social media, remember to include alt-text and captions to keep content accessible to everyone.
July is also Disability Pride Month, a time to honor the contributions, identity, and achievements of people with disabilities. It’s important to note that Disability Pride Month is separate from Pride Month in June. To learn more about your rights under the ADA, visit the ADA National Network website.
