It was announced that Justice Eric Rosen will be formally sworn in as chief justice in a public ceremony at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 8, in the Supreme Court courtroom at the Kansas Judicial Center in Topeka.
He officially took the oath privately on January 2, when the current chief justice resigned. Rosen has served as acting chief justice since mid-October, while Chief Justice Marla Luckert was on medical leave following a stroke. Luckert will remain on the court as a justice to complete pending cases.
Under the Kansas Constitution, the chief justice position goes to the justice with the most continuous service. It also allowed Luckert to temporarily step back while continuing her work on the court.
The ceremony will include Rosen’s family, friends, colleagues, and state and national officials. It will also be available to watch online at the Kansas Supreme Court’s YouTube channel.
