A Kansas State University football player was hospitalized following a head-on collision in Manhattan early Wednesday morning.

According to the Riley County Police Department (RCPD), the crash occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. on Nov. 13 at the intersection of Marlatt Avenue and Matter Drive. Authorities reported that a Jeep Cherokee crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.

A GMC Sierra, driven by 21-year-old Alec Marenco, attempted to swerve out of the way but collided with the Jeep as it returned to its lane. The impact resulted in significant damage to both vehicles.

Marenco, a senior linebacker from El Paso, Texas, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. K-State Athletics spokesperson Ryan Lackey confirmed Marenco’s identity, noting that he had appeared in one game this season on Sept. 7 against Tulane.

As of Nov. 14, Marenco has been discharged from the hospital.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
