Retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 Hector A. Vasquez has spent more than 40 years serving the Kansas Army National Guard, from Kansas to Kosovo. On Sept. 6, Kansas State University honored his service with the 2025 K-State Medal for Military Excellence.

The medal was presented by President Richard Linton during the K-State vs. Army football game, highlighting Vasquez’s military achievements and commitment to K-State’s mission. A private recognition ceremony was held in July with family and friends.

A Topeka native and lifelong Wildcat fan, Vasquez started college at K-State in 1977 but paused his studies to enlist, later earning his bachelor’s degree in social sciences in 2010. His career includes nine military assignments, three deployments, 28 military education courses, and 34 awards and decorations.

Vasquez and his family are active supporters of K-State Athletics, contributing to the Ahearn Fund and regularly attending games. The medal honors those who demonstrate leadership, service, and dedication to both country and K-State.
