K-State Mourns Former AD and Track Coach Steve Miller

Kansas State University is mourning the passing of former athletics director and track coach Steve Miller, who died June 15 at age 81 at his home in Portland, Oregon.

Miller spent nine years at K-State, serving as head cross country and track and field coach from 1981 to 1986, before moving into administration. He became athletics director in 1988, where he made the key hiring of football coach Bill Snyder, a move that helped reshape the football program.

During his coaching career, Miller led the women’s team to a Big Eight Cross Country Championship and coached 37 All-Americans. He was inducted into the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for July 7 in Portland. Miller is survived by his wife Suzanne, daughter Claudine, and son Christopher.
