A new seasonal food poster from Kansas State University is helping Kansans make more informed choices about locally grown produce, while sparking fresh conversations around seasonal eating and local food systems.
Created by K-State’s Local Food Systems program, the Kansas Seasonal Local Food poster shows which fruits and vegetables are in season each month. It’s designed to educate farmers market shoppers, support local growers, and reconnect consumers with Kansas’s rich agricultural rhythms—something many have lost touch with due to year-round availability in modern grocery stores.
Rebecca McMahon, program administrator, says the poster is already being used at farmers markets and community sites across the state. It serves as both a teaching tool and a guide for shoppers, especially those unfamiliar with seasonal foods.
In Kansas, growing weather can stretch up to nine months a year, and innovations like hoop houses now allow many farmers markets to operate year-round. The poster also highlights that Kansas-grown grains, meats, dairy, and honey are often available year-round.
The full-color poster is available online for download or purchase through the K-State Extension bookstore: https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/item/kansas-seasonal-local-food-poster_MF3712.
