K-State Student Tests Positive for Tuberculosis; University and Health Officials Coordinating Response

A K-State student in Manhattan has tested positive for tuberculosis (TB) and is currently receiving treatment while isolating according to CDC guidelines.

TB is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Not everyone infected becomes ill, and only those with active TB can spread it through the air, usually after prolonged close contact. Casual interactions or contact with surfaces, skin, or clothing do not typically transmit TB.

K-State is coordinating with the Riley County Health Department to identify individuals who had close, extended contact with the student. Those needing testing will be contacted by the health department.

For more information, visit the Lafene Health Center website for TB FAQs or the CDC’s tuberculosis page. Students, faculty, or staff with concerns can contact Lafene Health Center at 785-532-6544 or their healthcare provider. TB testing is also available through the health department.
