The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has been operating for three years, and new data show continued growth and improving performance in Kansas. The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services released a report to the 2025 Legislature outlining actions taken by the Kansas 988 Coordinating Council and reviewing statewide call data.
The council met six times in 2025 to review call volumes, answer rates, and response times. Data show a steady rise in calls, increasing from 2,751 in January 2025 to nearly 3,800 in October. After starting the year below target, Kansas maintained an in-state answer rate at or above its 90 percent goal after March.
In 2025, the council focused on improving coordination across the crisis response system, expanding outreach, and strengthening mobile crisis response and 988-911 coordination. The report recommends increasing long-term funding, exploring new revenue sources, and extending the council beyond 2026 to support continued growth and oversight of the 988 system.
