A new study by Recovered ranks Kansas among the states with the lowest rates of fatal crashes involving drunk drivers. Between 2019 and 2023, 14.9% of deadly crashes in Kansas involved a driver over the legal blood alcohol limit, making it the ninth-lowest rate nationwide and 27.7% below the national average of 19.7%.
The study used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to examine the percentage of fatal collisions involving alcohol-impaired drivers across all 50 states.
Mississippi reported the fewest fatal drunk driving crashes, with just 8.2% involving alcohol. At the other end of the spectrum, Montana ranked as the most dangerous state for drunk driving, with 32.2% of fatal crashes involving impaired drivers.
The findings come as road travel increases during the summer months. Experts urge drivers to plan ahead, stay sober, and help ensure safe travel for all.
