After severe storms hit Kansas in May, the state began working with FEMA to assess the damage in several counties. These storms brought strong winds, tornadoes, and flooding that damaged roads, bridges, and utilities in Bourbon, Cheyenne, Edwards, Gove, Kiowa, Logan, Pratt, Reno, Scott, Sheridan, and Stafford Counties.

Teams from FEMA and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management are now doing Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDAs) to see if the damage meets federal standards for disaster aid. This step is important in helping FEMA decide whether to recommend a federal disaster declaration to the President.

If the President approves the request, affected counties could receive help with repairs and recovery. The information collected during these assessments also helps shape long-term recovery plans. The goal is to make sure communities get the support they need to rebuild after the storms.
