Kansas is marking the first-ever Women in Sports Broadcasting Day, honoring the contributions and impact of women in sports media. The day was proclaimed by Gov. Laura Kelly, following efforts by KSN-TV sports anchor Asia Cymone Smith, who has made mentoring and promoting women in the field a central part of her work. Women still make up only 38% of sports broadcasters in the state.
Smith, also Miss Kansas USA, runs Girls Talk Game, a mentorship program helping young girls pursue careers in sports media through school visits, group sessions, and one-on-one coaching. The proclamation also recognizes Kansas-connected journalists who have achieved national success, including Becky Dixon, Aminia Smith, and Kendra Douglas.
The observance highlights both progress and ongoing challenges, encouraging women to pursue leadership and analyst roles in sports. For Smith and fellow broadcasters Micaela Dea and Rachel Hallam, the day emphasizes support, mentorship, and creating opportunities for the next generation.
