Kansas Cold Weather Rule Ends March 31; Deadline for Payment Plans and LIEAP Applications Approaches

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) is reminding utility customers the Cold Weather Rule ends on Monday, March 31. This rule prevents disconnections for residential customers of KCC-regulated utilities when temperatures are forecast below 35 degrees. When it expires, customers who haven’t made payment arrangements may face disconnection. Reconnection after March 31 may require full payment of past-due balances, depending on the utility’s policy. Customers can still request a 12-month payment plan before the rule ends.

Monday is also the deadline to apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). Applications must be submitted to the Kansas Department of Children and Families by 5 p.m.

For assistance programs, contact your utility or the KCC Consumer Protection Office. More resources are available on the KCC website.

Note: The KCC does not regulate co-ops or municipal utilities, though many offer similar cold weather payment plans.
