Kansas residents are gearing up for Kansas Day on January 29, 2026, an annual observance celebrating the day Kansas became the 34th state in the United States on January 29, 1861.

First observed in 1877 by schoolchildren in Paola, the day has grown into a statewide tradition focused on learning about Kansas history and heritage, according to TimeAndDate.com. Activities often include school programs, visits to museums and the Kansas State Capitol, and lessons about pioneer life and notable Kansans.

Even though it’s not a public holiday, meaning businesses and schools stay open, many communities host events that make the day special for families and students.

From hands-on history lessons to celebrating the “Sunflower State,” Kansas Day honors the state’s past and its people.
