The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced a public auction for surplus bison from Maxwell Wildlife Refuge on November 6th. The auction will start at 11 a.m. and will be held at the Refuge, located six miles north of Canton in McPherson County. Both bidders and non-bidders are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Maxwell Wildlife Refuge is dedicated to preserving the area’s prairie heritage, maintaining herds of bison and elk, which are native to Kansas grasslands. However, since the Refuge can only support a limited number of animals, surplus bison are periodically sold at public auctions.
A combined total of 66 bison will be auctioned this year, including:
4 – Cows
5 – 2-yr-old Heifers
13 – Yearling Heifers
12 – 2-yr-old Bulls
16 – Yearling Bulls
8 – Bull Calves
8 – Heifer Calves
Heifer calves older than 6 months will be vaccinated for brucellosis, and certificates will be issued.
Those interested in bidding can pre-register by completing the bidder registration form. Registration will also be available on-site. More information can be found on KDWP’s website.
