Kansas Eliminates Food Sales Tax Starting January 1st

Starting January 1st, the final reduction of the food state sales tax rate will take effect, completely eliminating the tax.

This reduction began in 2022 when Kansas lawmakers passed the law. Initially, the tax on food was 6.5%, dropping to 4% in 2023, and then to 2% this year. By next year, the food sales tax will be gone for good.

Governor Laura Kelly stated that this tax cut is a significant win for Kansas families, with the average family of four expected to save over $500 annually.

Items classified as food and food ingredients include bottled water, candy, dietary supplements, and soft drinks. However, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and most prepared foods are not covered by this exemption, and local sales and use taxes will still apply.
