Phone and internet access are essential lifelines, yet many Kansans struggle to afford connectivity. In recognition of National Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, September 7–13, the Kansas Corporation Commission is joining regulators nationwide to raise awareness about Lifeline, a program that offers financial assistance for phone and internet services.

Lifeline provides combined federal and state discounts of up to $17.02 per month for residential or wireless phone service, internet, or bundled plans. Additional discounts are available for subscribers living on tribal lands. Nearly 8.6 million Americans, including 19,500 Kansans, currently participate.

Eligibility is based on income (at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines) or enrollment in programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension, Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Head Start Tribal Programs, or the Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands.

The 2022 Safe Connections Act also provides Lifeline support for survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and related crimes. Eligible survivors can receive up to six months of emergency service, with privacy protections in place. More information is available at Lifeline Support.
