Kansas Expands Move-Over Law to Protect All Disabled Vehicles

Governor Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 8 on Monday, expanding move-over requirements to include all stationary vehicles displaying hazard warning lights. The new law ensures greater safety for drivers of disabled vehicles and others on the road by requiring motorists to proceed with caution and change lanes away from the stopped vehicle when possible and safe.

Previously, move-over laws only applied to emergency personnel, later extending to road service vehicles, utility trucks, and tow trucks. This year, the protections now cover all highway vehicles, further enhancing road safety.

“Thanks to this commonsense bill, all drivers will now be required to move over or slow down if there is a vehicle on the side of the road with flashing lights,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “This bill will improve safety and will make it easier to educate the driving public.”
