Kansas has received an extension to submit a request for a major federal disaster declaration following the severe winter storm that hit the state on January 4-5, bringing heavy snowfall, high winds, and freezing temperatures.
“We are grateful for the extension to file our request for a major federal disaster declaration,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “This additional time will allow personnel from the Kansas Division of Emergency Management to gather all the necessary information to corroborate the incident period and the damages caused by the storms.”
In a January 23 letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Governor Kelly requested an extension until March 6, 2025, to submit the request.
The extension will allow additional time for preliminary damage assessments and enable the state to seek federal assistance through the Public Assistance Program, which provides cost-sharing funds to repair damaged public infrastructure like roads and bridges.
