Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins has announced his candidacy for Kansas Insurance Commissioner. A Republican, Hawkins has represented House District 100 since 2013 and has served as Speaker since January 2023. Before that, he completed two terms as House Majority Leader and chaired the House Health & Human Services Committee for four years.
Hawkins, 64, is a former small business owner with nearly 20 years of experience providing employee benefits. He also served in the Kansas Army National Guard, retiring in 1991. Following his military service, he worked as an insurance agent for Mutual of New York and the National Farmers Union before launching his own insurance agency.
A Buhler High School graduate, Hawkins earned his degree from Emporia State University in 1983 after attending Hutchinson Community College. He has been re-elected to the Kansas House six times, winning by an average margin of 26.2 percentage points. He currently serves on five legislative committees, including as chair of the calendar and printing committee.
