Kansas Leaders Discuss Farm Bill, Trade, and Tariffs Ahead of Presidential Address

Representative Sharice Davids and Kansas Farm Bureau President Joe Newland held a virtual press call today ahead of the president’s joint address to Congress, discussing key issues affecting Kansas farmers and ranchers.

Rep. Davids emphasized the importance of passing a strong, bipartisan farm bill to provide certainty for farmers, particularly regarding crop insurance, conservation programs, and rural infrastructure. Frustration was expressed over delays due to political gridlock, noting that Kansas farmers cannot afford further uncertainty. Newland stressed the importance of the bill for young and emerging farmers, who are especially vulnerable to economic fluctuations.

Newland, who will be Rep. Davids guest at the address, also highlighted the challenges farmers face, particularly trade policies. He voiced concerns over new tariffs, which could raise costs on essentials like fertilizer and reduce export opportunities. He stressed the need for trade policies that support, rather than hinder, Kansas agriculture. Rep. Davids criticized the lack of predictability in the administration’s trade approach and pledged to push back against policies that harm Kansas agriculture.

Both leaders agreed that strong agricultural policy is critical to Kansas’s economy. They urged swift action on the farm bill and trade agreements to provide stability for farmers and ranchers.
