The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Drive To Zero (DTZ) Coalition are challenging all travelers to participate in Buckle Up Phone Down Day, observed nationwide on October 30.
In support of this initiative, law enforcement will increase enforcement of seat belt, child restraint, and texting laws throughout the state. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of buckling up and putting phones down to help reduce traffic fatalities.
KDOT Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed encourages all Kansans to participate, emphasizing that this simple reminder should be followed every trip, every time. In 2023, 387 people died in crashes in Kansas, with 134 fatalities involving individuals who were not properly restrained.
Distracted driving is also a significant issue in the state, with nearly 14,000 crashes attributed to distractions last year. These incidents, caused by activities such as texting, eating, or grooming while driving, resulted in over 300 serious injuries and 99 fatalities.
