Kansas is facing its largest measles outbreak in years, with confirmed cases continuing to rise across the state. According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), 83 measles cases have been reported as of July 2, up from 51 in early May. Most cases are linked to a southwest Kansas outbreak, with a few tied to international travel in Sedgwick and Reno counties.

Health officials say the outbreak is part of a larger multi-state surge that originated in West Texas. Genetic testing confirmed that the Kansas cases involve the D8 strain of the measles virus. KDHE expects additional cases, especially in underimmunized communities in southwest Kansas.

Unvaccinated children account for the majority of cases in Kansas. Nearly all infected individuals had not received the recommended two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Nationwide, the CDC reports that 96–97% of measles cases this year involve unvaccinated or unknown-status individuals.

The national picture is also concerning. As of early July, the CDC has confirmed 1,267 measles cases in 38 states—already surpassing 2024’s total of 285. At least 27 outbreaks have been documented, with over 88% of cases tied to those clusters.

KDHE is urging healthcare providers to report suspected measles cases within four hours and prioritize testing using RT-PCR. They also encourage vaccinating exposed individuals, conducting contact tracing, and launching targeted public education efforts.

Experts attribute the Kansas outbreak to declining vaccination rates, which have dropped below the 95% threshold needed for herd immunity. The virus spreads easily, remaining airborne or on surfaces for up to two hours, and can infect 90% of those not immune.

Health officials stress that two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection against measles. With cases continuing to climb, KDHE warns that quick action is needed to prevent further spread.
