Kansas Senate Overrides Governor’s Veto on “Help Not Harm Act”

The Kansas Senate voted to override Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of the “Help Not Harm Act.”

The Kansas Senate voted 31-9 to override the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 63, the Help Not Harm Act.

Senate President Ty Masterson released a statement regarding the action taken by the Kansas Senate.

“Today, a supermajority of the Kansas Senate declared that Kansas is no longer a sanctuary state for the maiming and sterilization of minors,” Republican Senate President Ty Masterson said. “This action is consistent with President Trump’s Executive Order to stop these barbaric procedures nationwide. Let’s also never forget the bravery of the victims and whistleblowers who have testified and stood up for the protection of children. Kansas stands with you.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Gov. Kelly vetoed Senate Bill 63.

The Kansas House vote was sent to Gov. Kelly on Friday, Jan. 31.

Senate Bill 63 would ban gender-affirming care for children under the age of 18. The Senate approved the bill with 28 votes, enough for a veto-proof majority.

The House vote was 83 to 35, one short for an override, but multiple legislators missing from that vote would be expected to vote in favor.
