Kansas State Treasurer Launches Week-Long Effort to Help Nonprofits Claim Their Share of $640 Million in Unclaimed Property

In preparation for National Nonprofit Day on August 17, State Treasurer Steven Johnson announced a week-long outreach initiative to encourage nonprofit organizations across Kansas to search for unclaimed property that may belong to them. Dedicated staff will work to raise awareness that many nonprofits are entitled to a portion of the over $640 million in unclaimed property held by the state, which includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and more.

Leading up to National Nonprofit Day, the Kansas Unclaimed Property Division will reach out to various organizations, including school districts, civic groups, charitable foundations, and faith-based organizations, that may be unaware of the funds owed to them. The outreach efforts will focus on educating these organizations about the claims process and providing assistance as needed.

“Given the many needs nonprofits meet within Kansas communities, we know that any funds returned to nonprofit organizations will have a multiplied effect in the community they serve,” said Treasurer Johnson. “We want to find and return every dollar we can to further support the essential services many nonprofits provide.”

The Treasurer’s office urges all nonprofits to check the database and see if they can benefit from a share of the missing funds held by the unclaimed property division. To start the search for unclaimed property, nonprofits can visit www.treasurer.ks.gov.
