Kansas State University Extension and The University of Kansas Cancer Center have partnered to help Kansans take charge of their health through regular cancer screenings, focusing on rural and underserved communities. The collaboration aims to increase awareness, access, and participation in screening for preventable cancers such as prostate, breast, lung, colorectal, and melanoma.
Using local extension offices in every county, the partnership will bring education, resources, and screening opportunities directly to communities. Programs include at-home tests, like FIT kits for colorectal cancer, and support for scheduling in-clinic screenings. The initiative also offers guidance based on personal and family health history and connects residents with genetic counseling when needed.
In addition to screenings, the program promotes healthy lifestyle choices, including tobacco cessation, maintaining a healthy weight, good nutrition, and exercise. Training for extension staff on survivorship care will help communities support residents after cancer treatment.
