Kansas State University announced that Dr. Megin Nichols, an expert on diseases that spread from animals to people, will speak on October 6 as part of the Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems lecture series. Her talk will focus on how human health, animals, and the environment are connected.

Dr. Nichols explains that many diseases come from animals and can affect our health, food supply, and economy. For example, outbreaks like bird flu have impacted farms and food prices. These diseases spread through viruses, bacteria, and parasites, and about 60% of human infectious diseases come from animals.

Preventing these diseases is important, and simple actions like washing hands and using bug spray help. New science tools also help track and manage these diseases better.

Dr. Nichols is excited to speak in Manhattan, home to Kansas State and a top livestock disease research lab. She emphasizes working together across fields and training future experts to better handle health threats. The lecture series aims to educate the public and students about important food and health issues, continuing the legacy of Henry C. Gardiner, who helped improve the beef industry through science.
