Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center Temporarily Suspends Treatment for Poultry and Wild Birds Amid Avian Flu Surge

Due to the resurgence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in several Kansas counties and nationwide, Kansas State University’s Veterinary Health Center is temporarily not accepting poultry species or wild birds for treatment. This precaution is in place to protect both the center’s patients, including other birds and mammals, and the staff from potential exposure.

Pet birds such as parrots and canaries that live indoors will still be treated by the center’s veterinarians.

HPAI is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects birds but has recently been reported to impact some mammal species, including humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Poultry owners are encouraged to visit the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s website for resources on biosecurity measures and contact information in case of suspected avian influenza in their flocks. Poultry species include chickens, turkeys, quail, pheasants, and waterfowl.

Anyone who encounters injured or deceased wild birds should contact the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks at 620-672-5911, providing details about the bird’s location, species, and condition.
