Governor Laura Kelly and Kansas Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed announced that 40 local and off-system bridge projects across Kansas will receive $40.25 million in funding through two bridge improvement programs. This investment leverages new revenue from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. With additional matching funds from local cities and counties, the total project value exceeds $45.2 million. By restructuring the local bridge programs to incorporate BIL funding, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has more than doubled its annual funding under the existing Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program.
Kansas has over 19,000 bridges on local road systems, with nearly 5,000 needing updates to meet current standards. To address this KDOT is providing $20.45 million through the Off-System Bridge program in Fiscal Year 2026, funding 21 projects statewide. Additionally, $19.8 million will be distributed through the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program in Fiscal Year 2025 for 19 bridge replacements, while four bridges will be permanently removed from local systems.
These programs focus on city and county bridges not part of the state highway system, with funds awarded through an application process requiring local contributions. KDOT evaluates applications based on factors like bridge condition, detour length, load capacity, and project history. For this cycle, KDOT received 170 applications requesting a total of $162.3 million in funding.
