Kansas Updates Pesticide Certification Process Following EPA Mandate: Changes to Exam Options and Training

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated that each state update its pesticide certification and training plans. To comply, the Kansas Department of Agriculture introduced House Bill 2607, which was passed by the state legislature and brings changes to the private applicator certification process.

Previously, individuals could take an open-book exam for new private pesticide applicator certifications at their local extension office for a $25 fee. Starting January 1, 2025, this open-book exam option will no longer be available. Instead, those seeking certification at the extension office will need to take a closed-book exam.

Other certification options include attending an in-person training session at one of the annual events held statewide, typically for a $75 registration fee, or completing an online training through CanvasPro, which includes six modules with review activities.
