Kansas Wheat, in partnership with Kansas State University researchers, has launched a new campaign called “Wheat: Beyond the Value of the Grain.” This campaign aims to educate farmers, landowners, financial institutions, and policymakers about the many benefits of including winter wheat in cropping systems. While wheat is well-known for its role in global food security, this campaign highlights its broader advantages, particularly in sustainable farming practices.
The campaign, which follows research showing a decline in winter wheat acres in Kansas, stresses how wheat contributes to economic and environmental sustainability. Winter wheat offers flexibility in the growing season, providing a broad planting window and the option to produce both grain and high-quality forage, which can boost economic returns. Research shows that wheat in crop rotations leads to better yields in other crops like corn and soybeans, compared to monoculture systems. For example, soybean yields in Kansas were 12 bushels per acre higher when rotated with wheat.
In addition, winter wheat helps improve soil health by enhancing soil structure, organic matter, and nutrient cycling. It also assists in controlling pests and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides. These benefits show that wheat plays a crucial role in sustainable farming, improving productivity while also supporting environmental stewardship.
The goal of the campaign is to share these insights through easy-to-understand, two-page publications that focus on each of wheat’s benefits. By promoting these advantages, the campaign aims to help farmers make informed decisions that support long-term profitability and sustainability in their operations.
