Kansas Wheat Leadership Program Provides In-Depth Look at Industry, From Seed to Flour

The 2025 Kansas Wheat Leadership Program provided participants with an in-depth look at the wheat industry, offering insights into everything from seed development to flour milling. This year’s event, held on March 5-6 at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center in Manhattan, aimed to show attendees the intricate processes involved before and after wheat is planted. The program was sponsored by the Farm Credit Associations of Kansas, making it free for all attendees.

The group of participants, including young wheat farmers, agribusiness professionals, and a farm blogger, gained a new understanding of the wheat supply chain. The program began with a Wheat 101 session and a tour of the innovation center. Participants also learned about wheat breeding techniques, including a hands-on demonstration of wheat emasculation, which aids in developing new wheat varieties.

The second day focused on wheat milling, with a tour of K-State’s Hal Ross Flour Mill and discussions on flour production. Participants gained a greater appreciation for the many steps involved in getting wheat from the field to the final product on store shelves. The program highlighted how Kansas wheat farmers’ checkoff dollars contribute to the efficiency and advancement of the entire wheat industry.
