The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will hold three public meetings in March to hear feedback on the night vision coyote hunting season. These meetings will give people a chance to share their thoughts, which will help KDWP decide on the season dates.
Meeting Dates and Locations:
- March 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – El Dorado State Park Shooting Facility, 2980 NE Shady Creek Access Rd, El Dorado, KS
- March 24, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – Sportsman’s Acres, 3922 Highway K-244 Spur, Junction City, KS
- March 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – Brief Space, 219 W 10th St, Hays, KS
Dr. Jon Beckmann, assistant director of KDWP’s wildlife division, explains that coyotes are a nongame species in Kansas but are still managed like furbearers. Around 30,000 people hunt coyotes in Kansas each year.
The night vision coyote hunting season runs from January 1 through March 31, allowing hunters to use artificial light, night vision, and thermal imaging with a $2.50 permit. There are no limits on coyote hunting year-round.
Although no changes to the season have been proposed, KDWP Acting Secretary Christopher Kennedy says the department wants to hear all views. The topic will also be discussed at the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission meeting on March 27 in Topeka.
