The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Thursday afternoon in Leavenworth.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 18, Leavenworth police received several calls about an armed man behind a bank at 601 Delaware St. Officers arrived and found a man carrying a rifle and wearing a trench coat and surgical mask.

Police say the suspect, identified as a 24-year-old from Leavenworth, briefly followed commands to get on the ground but then ran through an alley behind the bank. Several officers chased him. During the pursuit, one officer fired a shot, hitting the suspect.

Officers secured the rifle and provided medical aid until emergency crews arrived. The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition and is expected to recover. No officers were injured.

The Leavenworth Police Department requested KBI assistance at about 4:10 p.m. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team are conducting an independent investigation. When the investigation is complete, the findings will be sent to the Leavenworth County Attorney to determine whether charges will be filed. The investigation remains ongoing.
