KCC to Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Black Hills Energy Rate Hike That Could Raise Bills 17.6%

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) will hold a public hearing next week to allow Black Hills Energy customers to learn about and comment on the company’s proposed natural gas rate increase. Black Hills is requesting a $17.2 million rate hike to recover past costs tied to maintaining safe, reliable service. If approved, residential bills could rise by 17.6%—around $11 more per month for an average user—starting in late 2025. The company serves about 120,000 customers in Kansas.

The hearing is set for Tuesday, April 29 at 6 p.m. at Lowe Auditorium in Wichita. A virtual option is available via Zoom for those who register by noon on April 28 at the KCC website. The hearing will also stream live on the KCC’s YouTube channel.

Written comments are being accepted through 5 p.m. on June 20, 2025. Submissions can be made online, by mail, or by phone. The KCC will issue a decision by August 29, 2025.
