KDHE Issues Stream Advisory for Smoky Hill River Due to Elevated Contaminant Levels

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a stream advisory for the Smoky Hill River, from Salina east to its confluence with the Saline River, due to operational issues at the Salina Wastewater Treatment Facility. The City is working to resolve the problems.

The advisory was issued because of potential elevated levels of E. coli bacteria and other contaminants in the river. KDHE recommends residents avoid the river at this time. Those living near the stream or engaging in activities there should not enter the water, nor should children or pets.

KDHE will lift the advisory once testing confirms that swimming in the river is safe.
