The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is reminding everyone to stop for school buses now that school is back in session. The Kansas School Bus Stop Arm Law requires all vehicles to stop when they approach a stopped school bus that has flashing red lights and its stop arm out. Drivers should remain stopped until the bus has put the arm back and the lights are no longer flashing. Even when traffic is oncoming from a two or four-lane roadway, drivers coming from both directions are required to stop.
KDOT emphasizes the importance of stopping for school buses because neglecting to do so can endanger children. Not only that, but it also can result in a hefty fine and court costs.
